Smartphones opening more doors

Smart phones acting as keys to your house are growing momentum. While some predictions say smart locks won’t be mass marketed until 2019, that prediction is looking a little conservative with more than half a dozen different smart locks on the market already.

None of these products are perfect. As with all new technology there are bugs and hiccups, but it is early days. Could you imagine not having to worry about carrying around a bunch of keys as well as your phone and your wallet?

As for the question of insurance, well as always we’d recommend you talk with your insurance provider about whether a smart lock is covered by your insurance.

Is it safe?

It will be.

Sort of.

Assuming the companies developing the smart locks solve the biggest problem; smart locks will be safe(ish). This problem is one that’s facing smart phones even now. And even if smart locks have “military-grade encryption between the locking mechanism and the phone” this problem is still going to be very real.

That problem is hacking. Can you imagine if your home security, from locks to alarms was all controlled by your phone? If someone in their mother’s basement figures out how to hack your phone, they now have access to your house. Imagine getting home to find your phone’s locked you out. So for now, there are questions: lots of questions about the efficacy of smartphones as keys for your house.

Don’t get confused though. There is a lot of good press for smart locks, because they do work. It becomes a question of choosing the right product for you, and making sure you have contingencies in place. It’s making sure you do your homework and assessing if smart locks are right for you and your home.

Until then?

While we wait for smart locks to become another everyday part of life, and they will (just look at like iPods, smartphones, and smartwatches), there are: traditional locks, alarm systems, and safes are a sure-fire way of improving the safety and security of your home and business.
